Simon Davies is expecting Fulham to favour an attacking philosophy under new manager Martin Jol.

The Cottagers have turned to the Dutchman in the wake of Mark Hughes’ shock departure after just a year at the helm.

Jol arrives boasting previous experience of life in the Premier League from his time in charge of Tottenham.

His first game as Fulham boss is set to take place on Thursday, with NSI Runavik of the Faroe Islands having to be negotiated in the first qualifying round of the Europa League.

A competitive fixture so early in the summer is not ideal, but it will give the Cottagers an opportunity to establish some momentum and get to grips with the methods of their new boss.

Not that Jol is expected to take too long getting his message across, with Welsh winger Davies aware that the former Ajax boss will be looking for his side to entertain.

“He’s a manager that very much promotes an attacking outlook,” he said.

“He likes his teams to be expansive and to get down the flanks. We’ll get forward, attack and create lots of chances and that’s the big thing for me.

“If we can get things right then it could be an exciting season ahead. One thing is for sure, we’ll certainly be good to watch.

“He’s a football man and one that has a great knowledge of the game. He’s been in the game for a while now so he comes in with plenty of experience.

“He did very well in his last spell in the Premier League when he was at Tottenham, so he knows what to expect in terms of the league.

“He also did well at Hamburg and Ajax, so he has experience of European football too.

“He gets very involved in training sessions and likes to instil confidence in his players. He has a philosophy that we can all relate to and hopefully we’ll see the benefits of that.”
