Mark Hughes has said he is “very flattered” to be linked to Bayern Munich but stressed he has no intention of leaving Fulham for now.

Bayern have announced that current coach Louis van Gaal will leave at the end of the season after a disappointing season in the Bundesliga, and there have been suggestions his departure will be brought forward following the Champions League exit to Inter this week.

Matthias Sammer, currently working for the German Football Federation, and Bayer Leverkusen’s Jupp Heynckes have both been linked with the position, but the Daily Mail has claimed Hughes is also under consideration.

Asked about the rumours on Thursday, Hughes said: “It’s very flattering but I’m quite happy doing what I’m doing at the moment.”

Hughes enjoyed a successful loan spell at Bayern Munich in the 1987-88 season and would have made the move permanent had Barcelona not rejected a £1 million bid as the campaign drew to a close. He eventually returned to Manchester United for £1.8 million.

He added: “Sometimes, when a job becomes vacant then people look around to see whether there are any connections in terms of past playing careers or whatever. I think there’s no more in it than that.

“If opportunities [to manage abroad] in the future present themselves, I think it would be part of my football education and something that I’d want to do, but I’m not looking to do it at the moment.

“I’m enjoying my work. I think it’s a great club and we’re going in the right direction. Certainly, if we can invest more in the players next year as well then I think we can kick on.”

Hughes managed Wales, Blackburn and Manchester City before taking over from Roy Hodgson at Fulham at the start of the current season. Fulham currently lie 11th in the table.
