Manchester United have confirmed that they have reached an agreement with Fulham and Chris Smalling. The England under-21 international defender will move to Old Trafford at the end of this season. No news on a fee.

I doubt that Roy and the board would have been foolish enough to sell him for £3m rising to £8m, as has been reported in some places. We will hardly be able to get a CB in who is as good as Smalling is already for £3m. No incentive for us to do so, when he has the potential to be worth much more. We must have received an big offer with most of the payments up-front, as this would make us actually consider selling the player and weighing up whether it is worth taking the money, or gamble on his “potential”. No way on either a business or a football sense in letting him leave with such a little sum up front.
