Sporting Gijon have dismissed claims that Roberto Canella could move to England in the transfer window, saying that they want the Spanish under-21 international to sign a new contract.
Reports that Aston Villa, Fulham and Wigan Athletic are interested in the left back have only served to stiffen Sporting’s resolve to hold onto Canella after midfielder Michel joined Birmingham for £3m last week. Sky Sports quote sources at Gijon as suggesting that nobody else will leave El Molinón during January:
The exit of Canella in January is impossible, after the sale of Michel we will not reduce the squad further. This is a definite decision.
