Just a word on Chris Smalling who looked very impressive at Wembley for the England Under-21s against Portugal yesterday afternoon. There was a bit of a buzz about him at Maidstone but surely nobody could have predicted just how quickly he would rise through the ranks.
The young centre back looked completely unruffled by his surroundings and slotted in happily alongside Micah Richards. Credit to him, Roy and Fulham. A friend of mine coming away from the Basel was astonished to learn that was only his third appearance for the club. He could be some player if he continues this progression.
