As a general rule, I try and steer clear of quoting Jamie Redknapp. Asking him to provide genuine tactical insight is like inviting Danielle Lloyd round for intelligent conversation. You’re kidding yourself.
But he’s spot on about Bobby Zamora.
Fulham’s Bobby Zamora isn’t prolific and gets stick from his own fans, but ask Jamie Carragher about his work rate.
He occupies defenders and works so hard. It’s not right to judge him simply on goals. He brings so much more.
A few fans sat near me last season were giving bobby some stick but this season he has had mroe songs sung about him that even hangeland. i wish he would change his celebration from the hush fing over lips and then pointing to the home fans. He needs to understand that we know he is invaluable in the way we play. Bobby; Fulham loves you – believe it!
Bobby’s celebration was an attempt to remind those in the broadcast media who had laughed at his miss at City that they should be quiet. While the print journalists sit in the Johnny Haynes stand, the TV and radio guys are still in the Riverside – hence his gesture towards them. He could, of course, been repeating the request of many a Fulham player/fan over the years and asking the Riverside to make a bit more noise but I doubt it!
Maybe he can avoid confusion by just celebrating with his team rather than trying to make some sort of statement that can be taken a million different ways.
But I like Bobby thinking he’s got a point to prove. He’s been olaying really well recently. And that’s not the only thing he did when celebrating – he also gave Duff a massive hug for a quality ball in.
I think BZ is right in telling some Fulham ‘fans’ to be quiet. I would too if I worked as hard as he does, only to have some of the constant, snide criticism directed at me, such as you read from a number of frequent posters on TIFF. Even after the Liverpool game, there were still some posters on TIFF having a go at him.
Ignore those people on TIFF, Mike. Some of them are clueless, others are wind-up merchants (I can never tell when Cheggers, who’s actually a nice guy is being serious) and sensible posters get shouted down.
Zamora’s been on fire of late – here’s what Roy had to say about him yesterday:
He has played very well this season I must say and in particular the last four or five games. He has really done the job that we want him to do.
“Last season he did well for us but without perhaps scoring the goals that would have crowned his performances. And this year he’s carrying on in great vein in terms of his work-rate and the way he holds the ball up for us. But he’s also scored a few goals and that’s good for strikers because that is what their reputation is built on.”
