Clint Dempsey was delighted to a score crucial equaliser for the United States in their World Cup qualifier against El Salvador on Saturday. The Americans conceded an early goal in Utah but ground out a 2-1 vital win and might have had more goals to show for their second half dominance.
The Fulham midfielder was happy with the way in which he took his headed goal.
They tried to do an offside trap on my goal. We were aware that they would try to do that, so I delayed my run a little bit.
And then on Jozy’s [Altidore] goal, Landon [Donovan] did a good job getting open and whipping the ball in. And I thought Jozy did a good job getting in the air and making sure he put the ball in the corner.
We went behind early and obviously that wasn’t the game plan. For us to qualify for the World Cup we have to get points from our home games and we dug deep. Our quality showed in the end. To be fair we could have scored another goal, but I think we showed a lot of character even with the score as it was. We got the three points and we’re looking forward to Trinidad.
The USA face Trinidad and Tobago, who may give a debut to Bobby Zamora, on Wednesday.
The US played very well considering they once again faced the wrath of a typical anti-American CONCACAF referee. It was comical for awhile but not its starting to piss me off. Jozy’s disallowed goal was pathetic.
Yeah, I saw that. It was a terrible decision.
Console yourself with this thought. When you get to South Africa, you at least shouldn’t have to face anymore CONCACAF referees. Hopefully, you won’t come up against any of England’s ‘finest’ (sic) either.
