Fulham led Portsmouth by a single goal at half time on the opening day of the season at Fratton Park.

There was more than an element of good fortune about the way the Whites took the lead, though. Clint Dempsey’s hopeful shot from distance struck Bobby Zamora on the back and flew into the opposite corner of the net, leaving David James stranded. What a way to get off the mark.

Zamora had a chance to double the lead a few minutes later when James made a good save from his header. Portsmouth had a couple of chances to equalise – the best falling to their on-loan striker Frederic Piquionne.
