The Daily Mail reckons that Fulham are one of three Premier League sides locked in a battle for Newcastle defender Steven Taylor.
The Mail say that, despite Chris Hughton’s denials yesterday, Taylor’s lone lap of honour after Newcastle’s 3-0 defeat of Reading on Saturday was a farewell to the St. James’ Park faithful. The report states that Aston Villa and Everton are also interested in the former England under-21 captain but none of three clubs have yet to move beyond initial enquiries to matching Newcastle’s asking price. The £6m quoted seems a lot more reasonable that some of the weeekend speculation that valued Taylor at around £10m.
On the subject of transfer rumours concerning highly-rated central defenders, it is pleasing that the media have dropped their insistence that any defensive target we are interested in is a direct replacement for Brede Hangeland.
Think they’ve dropped the Hangeland link after Roy’s insistance that no contact has been made between the two clubs; and they’ve also seen that Vermaelen is absolute class – probably a better and younger version of Hangeland IMO (blasphemy!). If Brede were to move to Arsenal, he would spend most of the time on the bench, as I can’t see him dislodging Gallas of Vermaelen.
Yeah, I thought Roy’s rather strong (for him) criticism of the media in that recent interview might convince a few of them to stop playing silly beggars.
That is blasphemy Nick, although I will concede that Vermaelen looks good. So good in fact that I can’t see Wenger shelling out big money for another centre back.
Solo lap of honour – maybe Johnny Paintsil will have someone to keep him company now?
Like it Chopper. Or we could just bring back Monica?
Monica was a big fav of mine. He didn’t quite make my Top 5 Fulham players but he did make my Top 5 players that smoked > http://chopstop5.blogspot.com/2008/03/top-5-footballers-who-smoked.html
Ha ha. A Sunderland-supporting mate has just sent me this link having read of our interest in Steven Taylor:
