The FA’s website brings us some great news on the progress of Fulham’s girls’ teams in Sweden this summer:

As Roy Hodgson’s Fulham team start on the road to European success the Fulham FC Girls Centre of Excellence teams have already tasted their own version of a European Cup Final.

The girls’ Centre Of Excellence U12s, U14s and U16s squads all reached their respective finals in a summer tournament held in Sweden.  The U12s produced an excellent winning performance in their final with the U14’s narrowly defeated 2-1 in a physically challenging encounter.

The climax of the tournament was a dramatic penalty shoot out in the U16s final, which resulted in the Fulham girls celebrating victory by scoring all of their spot kicks to seal a fantastic 5-4 victory after the game had ended 1-1 after extra time.

It was the Fulham Girls first overseas tour for the five day trip to Gotland and the general ethos of the excursion was to allow the players to continue their technical and tactical development but to also develop the social and mental aspects of their game in a tournament format.

Well done girls. It’s particularly impressive given that Fulham sadly dropped their Ladies team a few years ago.

I’m only surprised that Nick the Swede – who’s been in Gotland recently – didn’t bring us an exclusive report!
