Immense. That’s the only word to describe just how superb Brede Hangeland’s been at the heart of the Fulham defence. Commanding and confident, he seems to have brought best out of Aaron Hughes too. He might have had a shaky start – my Sunderland-supporting mates remember all too fondly how he seemed all at sea the day our survival dreams seemed to have suffered a fatal blow at the Cottage a couple of seasons ago – but he’s become one of the best centre backs in the league.

After an outstanding season, it is inevitable that the vultures will have been circling. Brede’s good relationship with Roy Hodgson stands us in good stead, though. Let’s hope he’s with us for years to come.
