I have written before about my admiration for Andy Burnham. The fact that he voiced his concerns about the Premier League’s dirty money-grabbing antics in a keynote address to the Supporters Direct annual conference might strike the cynics as grandstanding, but that is to misunderstand Burnham, who is actually a football man through and through. We can only hope that Burnham – and his Conservative successor as Culture Secretary (as a Tory government looks more and more likely) continue to keep up the pressure on football’s suits.
