Something for you to read on your lunch break:
– Rob Kelly reckons Mark Schwarzer might have made the save of the season at Newcastle.
– The big Aussie says his motivation for a fine season came from being considered past it a year ago.
– An amusing anecdote from the past involving Johnny Haynes, Tosh Chamberlain and a yellow card.
– Saturday’s victory must have been bittersweet for Aaron Hughes.
– Good news for Steve Finnan’s current employers. Espanyol haven’t seen much of our injury-hit right back but they edged clear of the relegation zone in Spain with a massive win.
– Apparently Roy Hodgson was checking out Marc-Antoine Fortune at the Hawthorns yesterday. Surely, he should have been looking at Robert Koren, if the rumours are to be believed?
Two points here. First, it’s ludicrous for anyone to suggest that Schwarzer was past it – least of all, a 20yr old goalkeeper who’s never been tested in top level football.
Second, what a wonderful story from Tosh Chamberlain. Made me chuckle. Those two sounded like real characters.
I think there’s a problem with the Tosh story. I don’t believe they had the card system in those days. Possibly “out came the ref’s book”.
I think you are right Mike. I didn’t make the connection when reading about it myself, but I’m not sure that yellow and red cards were introduced until the 1970 World Cup. Pretty sure that Best got sent off for Fulham on the first day they were used domestically too.
