That’s the encouraging news from today’s Daily Express. There had been rumours in the papers a month or so ago that both were looking around elsewhere, but Hangeland has always insisted he was happy at Fulham and we’ve heard little from Aaron Hughes on the matter.

Securing our two defensive linchpins to long-term contracts would be a brilliant way to end what has been a fantastic season. Hangeland has been the one generating all the headlines for his domineering performances at the back and you do feel that he would be difficult to replace as our defensive system does appear to be designed to his strengths. The report reckons that Hangeland will put pen to paper on a new four year deal. His good relationship with his manager, after they worked together at Viking, is thought to be one of the key factors influencing his decision.

Retaining Hughes is also massively important. He’s been the star of this season for me but doesn’t get anywhere near the recognition he deserves. Hodgson is spot on about the Northern Ireland skipper.

The best quality Aaron’s got is his temperament. He’s always in control and makes the right decisions. He and Brede are different. Brede catches the eye more, but Aaron deserves to be mentioned in the same breath.
