A few eyebrows were raised when it was reported that John Pantsil had told a Ghana football magazine that Roy Hodgson had given him £10,000 as a reward for keeping Cristiano Ronaldo quiet in our win over Manchester United the other month. I was sceptical about the story not least because the quotes published made it seem as though Pantsil was suggesting that he’d earned his money rather than that there was anything out of the ordinary.

Sarah Brookes issued a sternly worded denial to a Daily Mail follow-up story, which then suspiciously disappeared, before reappearing with a hasty rewrite. Then came Pantsil’s own rejection of the magazine’s article and now the magazine has retracted the story. I guess we won’t be deducted ten points now, then.
