We’ve seen already how Roy Hodgson wants to improve his squad for next season – whether or not we make into Europe.
The papers have linked us two young starlets today. Apparently, it will take a bid of £3m to take Jonjo Shelvey, the highly-rated 17 year-old, away from Charlton. Our interest has long been reported but Spurs and Newcastle are also hanging around and hoping to tempt Shelvey in their direction.
The other youngster Roy’s supposed is to be looking at is Gary Hooper, who has scored 30 goals for Scunthorpe in League One this season. There’s no doubt that he’s a talent – and at just 21 has plenty of time to mature. But surely signing him would be a gamble, unproven as he is at this level, and there’s always the potential that he could be another Gaby Zakuani.
I think you are suggesting that Gaby is not a good player. He is, and will no doubt grace the premiership at some time. Too often, young players are not given a chance at Fulham dispite being brought in with huge expectations.
interesting you say that, I think Zakuani will come good too. He played a lot of games at a young age for Orient, and never really got a chance with Fulham. I’ll be interested to see how he progresses.
Sorry. I’ve got to agree with Dan here. Coleman signed Zakuani on the basis of one game (the FA Cup defeat to Leyton Orient) at a horribly inflated price. He looked woefully short of the standard required in the League Cup games he played, which were invariably against lower league opposition, and didn’t pull him any trees yes. Perhaps he is/was a promising player for his age, but not Premier League quality as proven by his failure to break into the side in his two years at Fulham.
