Some neat analysis from Timmy over at the Fulham Offside on the Manchester United victory.
He highlights how much more integral Danny Murphy was to our success on Saturday with a look at how much more incisive our skipper’s passing was last weekend. This was all the more impressive considering Murphy was carrying an injury for the last 10 minutes he was on the field.
There’s a couple of other things to be said about the victory on Saturday. In comparison to the league game at Old Trafford, we played a different system and tried to contain United. This time we were in our usual 4-4-2 and Murphy looked a lot more comfortable. We were also much more aggressive in our style: not just in our passing and forward momentum but also in our tackling.
People have forgotten just how impressive Dickson Etuhu has been since he joined the club. He had a fantastic game on Saturday, hassling the big names in the United line-up. He played a crucial part in the second goal, doing exactly what Roy signed him for – winning a 50-50 to release Zoltan Gera and the rest is history. Etuhu playing the holding role releases Murphy from his deeper position to have the sort of impact on games that the United fans prefer to forget from his days with Liverpool.
