The James Beattie rumours continue to gather credence. Most of the tabloids and websites have been touting the fact that Beattie and Andy Johnson played together at Everton but to me this seems like a retrograde step. Add in the fact that the fee seems to have increased from £4m to £6m in the space of a couple of days and I think there would be better value for money to be found elsewhere.

Salvation might come in the shape of a Hull bid for Beattie. Phil Brown is known to want to increase the size of his squad as he tries to continue The Tigers excellent start to their first Premier League and would be keen to add to his striking options with Craig Fagan still continuing his comeback from a broken leg and Dean Windass not impressing in that nightmare first half at Manchester City.

The fact that Beattie’s wages appear to be substantial by Championship standards also rings some alarm bells for me.
