Fulham captain Danny Murphy believes his side can lift the Carling Cup – but they have to beat bogey team Burnley first.

The former Liverpool star, 31, says top clubs are happy to play second-string sides in the competition, giving teams like Fulham a great opportunity.

“Teams are putting more and more emphasis on winning the Premier League and Champions League these days,” said Murphy. “Clubs like ourselves have to make sure we capitalise on that.” Fulham travel to Turf Moor where they have not won on 28 visits over the last 57 years. But Murphy (above) added: “Being part of a team that wins a cup is something that stays with you for the rest of your life.

“I know how special it is to win a cup and with the squad we’ve got we’re capable of having some good cup runs.

“As the cup winning teams proved last year, it’s not worth writing yourself off before you start.
