Fulham failed in an audacious attempt to land Peter Lovenkrands late in the transfer window.

The Danish winger was keen to return to England after dropping down the pecking order at Schalke, but Roy Hodgson’s interest was dashed when the Bundesliga side hiked up their valuation of the former Rangers wide man. Schalke general manager Andreas Muller held out for £4m to complete the deal – which was well above what Fulham were willing to pay.

Lovenkrands, who spent six seasons at Ibrox, told Kicker of his disappointment: “It would have been an advantage to go to England for me and my family.”
