There have been a few whispers that Clint Dempsey, the last remaining American at the club, might be heading for the exit door.

Roy Hodgson said something at a recent club dinner along the lines of, ‘Clint is a good player. He thinks he’s a very good player’. The person who reported that remark to me says he reckons Hodgson said it in jest, so it’s hardly conclusive evidence, but you don’t need to be Sherlock Holmes to work out from his lack of game time that Hodgson doesn’t really rate Dempsey.

And now Dempsey’s shared his frustration with the News of the World, which isn’t a clever move. Could he be on his way? It’s certainly possible. Demspey does have a very high opinion of his footballing ability – and he’s not quite as good as he claims, even if he does work hard, but – infuriatingly – he’s more of a modern day Luis Boa Morte.

He has, however, already written himself into Fulham folklore with that goal against Liverpool.
