Apparently Jimmy Bullard’s frustrated that we haven’t offered him a new contract.

Whilst we should resist any temptations to sell our best players, I’m actually with Roy Hodgson on this one. Bullard’s got two years to run on his current deal at the Cottage and the club appear to be sticking to their guns – which would most likely see Bullard, his agent and Alistair MacIntosh sitting down over Christmas to discuss a new deal.

The main concern for me with Bullard is his fitness. He may be an inspirational player and the heartbeat of our midfield – already toasted as a household name by the fans – but he has played only around 20 games in two-and-a-half years after suffering that horrific injury at Newcastle. The club have to think long and hard about making sound long-term investments – and surely Jimmy can understand that.

While these sound like quotes fed from an agent to The People, the positive out of this little saga is that it could be a motivation for him ahead of the new campaign. Hit the ground running, find that form from the end of last year and be rewarded with a new contract once you’ve proved you’re worth it.

Everyone’s a winner.
