It was surprise when Aston Villa agreed to sell their young player of the year, Steven Davis, to Fulham for around £4m in the summer of 2007. The tidy midfielder was tempted south by his former international manager Lawrie Sanchez but the Fulham boss adopted long-ball tactics that completely neglected Davis’ definite strengths. The Northern Ireland international made 25 appearances for the Whites, but joined Rangers on loan in January 2008. His successful stint at Ibrox turned permanent the following summer – and Davis remains a key fixture in their midfield even now.
