Chris Coleman swooped to bring French international Philippe Christanval to Craven Cottage after the versatile ball-playing centre half had been on trial at Arsenal. The former Barcelona man was initially utilised in midfielder alongside the imposing Papa Bouba Diop before being switched into central defence. He scored his only goal for the club in an entertaining 3-3 draw with West Ham at Upton Park in January 2007, but saw his time in SW6 haunted by persistent injury problems. Christanval made just a solitary substitute appearance in the 2007-08 and was released after Fulham completed their Great Escape under Roy Hodgson.
