Fulham defender Brede Hangeland is set to become the club’s new captain after veteran striker Brian McBride announced he was quitting the club and returning to the United States.

Manager Roy Hodgson made Hangeland his skipper when the two men were at Norwegian side Viking.

Now he is set to promote the 6ft 5ins 26-year-old again after he proved so vital to Fulham’s successful fight against relegation.

Hangeland’s arrival from FC Copenhagen in the January transfer window more or less coincided with McBride’s return from a serious knee injury sustained in the third game of the season, and their respective presence in defence and attack proved instrumental in Fulham’s survival.
