Tottenham are lining up a surprise summer swoop for Fulham goalkeeper Antti Niemi, according to a Daily Mirror report this morning.

The Finland star, 34, has been in superb form for the Premiership strugglers since returning from a broken bone in his neck sustained against Watford on New Year’s Day.

But the ex-Southampton man only has one year left on his contract at Craven Cottage and talks over a new deal have been put on hold following Chris Coleman’s shock sacking.

AdvertisementNiemi’s situation has alerted Spurs manager Martin Jol, who wants a top shot-stopper to provide England No.1 Paul Robinson with some real competition.

Robinson has had a disappointing season by his standards and Jol only has Ben Alnwick and Radek Cerny as back-up at present.

Tottenham are confident of landing Niemi, who joined Fulham in January 2006 from Saints, if the West London club are relegated.

However, they may face competition from rivals Arsenal, who are seeking a keeper as out-of-contract Jens Lehmann is yet to sign a new deal.
