Fulham midfielder Michael Timlin returned from suspension to captain the Republic of Ireland’s Under-21 side to a 2-1 victory over Portugal in the Madeira Invitational Tournament.

Victory over Portugal meant that Ireland’s youngsters were Madeira Tournament champions for the second time in three years.

Michael had got the armband back from Gary Dicker after missing the Finland game through suspension, following two yellows in the opening game, and he kicked off the celebrations when he held the trophy aloft.

Ireland drew their first game against Madeira and then won 2-1 against Finland.

Fulham keeper Ricardo Batista, currently on loan at M.K. Dons, appeared for Portugal but despite playing well was unable to keep the Irish out.
