Gravesend & Northfleet boss Liam Daish has signed Fulham defender Robert Watkins on loan.

The 20-year-old, who had a five-game loan spell at Crawley last season, could make his debut in Tuesday’s local derby against Grays Athletic.

Watkins is described at Fulham as; “A left sided central defender, who joined Fulham’s Academy as a schoolboy. He originally came to the Club as a left winger, he was converted to a defender early on after Fulham’s coaching staff spotted his natural defensive abilities. Watkins is a good reader of the game.

“He’s not a flash player but he does his job with the minimum of fuss,” said Fulham’s reserve team manager, Paul Nevin. “You’ll rarely see him have a bad game so in that respect he’s a very dependable player. Technically he’s very good, he can play nice short passes but he’s also capable of playing accurate longer balls.”
