Fulham striker Brian McBride scored after 91 seconds as the USA beat Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night to move closer to World Cup qualification.

McBride’s 29th international goal – a smart finish from four yards from Bobby Convey’s cross – was all that separated the States from their opponents, although they completely dominated a one-sided contest. The Americans can clinch a spot at their fifth consecutive World Cup finals with a win over Mexico in Ohio next month.

McBride was modest in describing his winning goal afterwards: “Basically it was good ball movement. I just had to open up my foot and it went in.”
