Wigan Athletic want to make Fulham captain Lee Clark their first signing since winning promotion to the Premiership.

Latics boss Paul Jewell has been alerted by news the Cottagers are stalling on offering a new deal to out-of-contract midfielder Clark, 32. Jewell has turned to the Geordie after a £2million move for Tottenham’s Michael Brown was rejected.

The experienced midfielder will be a free agent in the summer and admits he is probably at the end of a successful spell at Craven Cottage. “I think that was my last game,” said the former Newcastle man after Sunday’s hammering of Norwich. “I’ve not had a contract put in front of me, so I think my time at Fulham has come to an end. It’s a shame. I don’t want to leave but that’s football I suppose.”
