If Dave Beasant wasn’t at the top of the list of departures in Chris Coleman’s summer reshaping of his backroom staff, the goalkeeping coach might well be now. It is understood that Fulham chairman Mohamed Al-Fayed was not amused by Beasant’s description of Motspur Park as “somewhere to park the car during the day” when he was asked what he was doing at Fulham during a late-night Sky Sports football phone-in programme.

Beasant, initially brought as back-up to Edwin van der Sar in the early days of Coleman’s tenure when Fulham’s goalkeeping resources had been stretched, also described his role on the club’s coaching staff as ‘a good way to pay the bills’. He claimed not to know anything about Fulham’s latest goalkeeping acquisition, the Czech international Jaroslav Drobny, and his participation in the programme has raised eyebrows amongst the Fulham hierarchy at a time when adding more experience to the club’s coaching staff is under serious discussion.
