Fulham have emerged as hot favourites to sign Rangers defender Michael Ball, according to a report in The Scotsman.

Manager Chris Coleman is desperate to sign a left-sided defender before the transfer window slams shut. He thought he had concluded a £500,000 deal for Manchester City’s Ben Thatcher earlier in the window only for the transfer to collapse at the eleventh hour.

The Premiership club have contacted Ball’s representatives in the last 48 hours to re-ignite their interest. Ball, who was signed by Rangers for £6.5m in August 2001, has made just six appearances for the Glasgow club this season.

An offer for the 25-year-old is expected before the closure of the January transfer window.

His agent, Blair Morgan, said: “Fulham are interested in signing Michael. I would not be at all surprised if they follow up their interest by close of business on Monday.”
