Fulham manager Chris Coleman is anxious to keep goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar – even though the Dutch international is currently being kept out of his first team by 35-year-old Mark Crossley.

Van der Sar is out of contract at the end of the season but Coleman insisted today: ‘I want to keep Edwin but I imagine he is keeping his options open. Even if he was playing first team football I don’t know if we would be able to keep him because his contract is up.’

The Fulham manager revealed that chief executive Jim Hone has opened talks with van der Sar’s representative.

Coleman said: ‘The chief executive has discussed it with his agent briefly but these things do take time. I want to keep all our best players.’
