Fulham boss Chris Coleman absolved Edwin van der Sar of any blame after his team lost 2-1 to Chelsea in the League Cup tonight.
“Maybe he could have done a bit better with the second goal, although he saw it a bit late because it came through Ian Pearce’s legs,” Coleman said.
“And the first one was a deflection. But I thought he played really well, and his distribution was fantastic.”
Coleman, without the injured Mark Crossley, added: “Edwin is a good goalkeeper – it’s as simple as that.”
The Fulham boss also said it was not certain that Van der Sar would leave Craven Cottage – despite reports.
“There’s been talk for the past month that he’s been out of the team and his contract is soon up – but he’s as good as he was last season.
“People are reading too much into it. Of course, he’s not going to be happy at being out of the team – but he’s got his head down and he’s got his place back now. He’s got to keep it now.”
