Birmingham City boss Steve Bruce confirmed this afternoon that he had assured Maik Taylor of regular football in order to secure his signing from Fulham.

The Northern Ireland goalkeeper had grown frustrated at his lack of opportunities in west London with Edwin van der Sar firmly established as Fulham’s number one. Taylor had previously spoken publicly of his desire to play first-team football in order to preserve his international place and Bruce admitted after his new signing’s excellent debut against Tottenham, where he kept a clean sheet, that he had to make promises in order to clinch the loan move.

The Birmingham manager, who dropped Ian Bennett to bench to accommodate Taylor in Blues’ Premier League opener, said: “When I met Maik Taylor the one thing I had to do was guarantee him a start to bring him here.”
