Chris Coleman has failed in a bid to sign the Rangers right back Fernando Ricksen.

The Fulham boss is still searching for a replacement for Steve Finnan, who joined Liverpool earlier this summer, and had identified the Dutch international as one of his top transfer targets. Ricksen was understood to be interested in a move to London after enduring a difficult couple of years in Glasgow that have seen him in trouble on and off the field but Alex McLeish has decided to hold onto the temperamental full back.

Fulham were willing to offer £4m for Ricksen, who has two years to run on his current contract at Ibrox, but McLeish and Rangers chairman David Murray rebuffed the Londoners’ interest.
