Fulham defender Andy Melville will miss the start of the Premiership season and admits he is doubtful for Wales’ crucial Euro 2004 qualifying games next month.

Melville picked up a foot injury during pre-season and has been ordered to rest before he can return to training.

The 34-year-old is resigned to missing out on the Cottagers’ clash with Middlesbrough next weekend, but fears his absence could stretch into September.

“I have started doing some light jogging but the physios reckon it will be a week to 10 days before I can start full training again.

“I also need some games under my belt before I return to the first team. It’s probably the worst time to pick up such an awkward injury. I’m a doubt for Wales.”
