Fulham newcomer Mark Crossley yesterday revealed his desire to play for Wales at Euro 2004 was the main motivation for his £500,000 transfer from Middlesbrough last week.
The 34-year-old believes Boro boss Steve McClaren did not give him a fair crack of the whip when he was battling to land the first-team jersey at the Riverside Stadium.
And Crossley is banking on Fulham boss Chris Coleman not harbouring the same attitude now he faces a selection duel with Edwin van der Sar, who pulled off a fine penalty save in Saturday’s 3-2 victory against his former club.
Crossley said: “I did get in the team at Boro and did very well. But then I was left out – so I hope that doesn’t happen here. Chris did keep Maik Taylor in the team ahead of Edwin for part of last season. I want to play for Wales and we have a great chance of reaching Euro 2004. If I get my chance at Fulham, it will open the door for me with Wales.”
