The capture from Wayne Collins from Premiership Sheffield Wednesday for £400,000 in January 1998 showed the extent of Second Division Fulham’s ambition. Collins was a regular starter in his three years at Craven Cottage on account of his versatility and helped the Whites win the Second Division title at a canter in 1998-99 and, although then a bit-part player, made five appearances, as Jean Tigana’s side secured promotion to the top flight in 2001. He also scored Fulham’s first goal of the new millennium during an outstanding display as Paul Bracewell’s side shocked Wimbledon in the third round of the FA Cup in 2000.
