Fulham goalkeeper Martin Herrera has signed a season-long loan deal with Estudiantes de la Plata.

The Argentinian joined Fulham from Alaves last summer but made only two first-team appearances as he was behind Edwin van der Sar and Maik Taylor in the club’s pecking order. He made his debut as a substitute at White Hart Lane following Maik Taylor’s sending off and his only senior start for the club came in a 2-2 draw with Southampton in March.

The 6ft 1in goalkeeper was keen to return to his homeland for a taste of first team football.

Fulham manager Chris Coleman said: “Martin is another who naturally wants first team football, and with Maik and Edwin here, he knows he’s not going to get that, which is why we’ve let him go back to Argentina for a season.”
