American left winger Eddie Lewis joined Fulham from the San Jose Earthquakes in March 2000 for £1.3m. He made eight league appearances in the remainder of a disappointing season for the Whites and struggled for game time subsequently as new manager Jean Tigana preferred Luis Boa Morte, who had loaned in from Southampton. Lewis left Fulham after playing 22 games and scoring his only goal – a brilliant strike against Derby County in the League Cup in October 2001 – to sign for Preston North End for £500,000.
