Fulham have signed Argentinian goalkeeper Martin Herrera on a free transfer from Spanish club Deportivo Alaves on a free transfer.
The 31 year-old, who spent three seasons in Spain, won the Ricardo Zamora Trophy for the best goalkeeper in La Liga after conceding just 37 goals in 38 games in his first year with Alaves as they finished sixth and qualified for the UEFA Cup. He helped Alaves reach the UEFA Cup final, which they eventually lost to Liverpool after extra time, earlier this month.
Herrera, who has signed a three-year contract with Fulham, is expected to challenge Edwin van der Sar for the number one jersey. He said:
“I am very happy to have signed for Fulham Football Club. I believe they are a side with great ambition and flair with a fantastic future ahead of them. I shall enjoy being part of the club’s second season in the Premiership and look forward to playing football in England.”
