Out-of-favour Fulham defender Alan Neilson is set for contract talks with Grimsby today about a possible move to the First Division club.
The Wales international played in a reserve game for The Mariners in midweek and impressed manager Lennie Lawrence.
Now he hopes to end his frustrating spell at Craven Cottage.
Grimsby boss Lawrence said: “We need a right-back and with Alan only on a month-to-month contract at Fulham, it means he is available immediately either on loan or possibly more.
“Obviously there is some negotiation to be done either way but the situation looks promising.
“He’s 29 and has played for three big clubs. There is no shame at not being in the Fulham side this season or last season. Steve Finnan plays in his position and he’s a Republic of Ireland international and a very good player indeed.
“We have a lot of young players at the club, so to have someone of Alan’s experience in the team would be a big boost,” he added on the club’s official website.
Neilson could even be in place at Grimsby in time to face Watford at the weekend and it would be a relief for him to get first-team football.
He first arrived at Craven Cottage in November 1997 after making a £250,000 move from Southampton.
But he has failed to make a single appearance for the club this season and played only seven times last year.
