Fulham captain Chris Coleman says he is “ahead of schedule” in his recovery from injuries sustained in a car accident last January – and hopes to play again this season.

The Welsh international was thought to be lucky to be alive after escaping a serious car crash with damaged knee ligaments and a broken right leg and ankle having lost control of his vehicle in Surrey and crashed into a tree.

“After the accident a lot of people said I wouldn’t make it back and yet the doctors gave me a 75 per cent chance. So far I’m ahead of schedule. This was a bad injury, as bad as it gets. My tibia has knitted perfectly and now I’m running and doing the odd twist and turn.

The next step is whether my knee is OK. I damaged a cruciate in the accident, but so far it hasn’t given me any extra problems. If I’m told I don’t need an operation then it is possible, just possible, that I could be back before the end of the season. If not, it will be the start of next season.
