Fulham have this afternoon confirmed the signing of Dutch international goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar for £7m from Juventus.
The Whites and Juventus released brief statements detailing that van der Sar had passed a medical at Motspur Park after confirming that they had agreed a deal for the transfer yesterday afternoon. The 30 year-old goalkeeper’s decision to join the Premiership newboys has stunned the footballing world but shows that Mohamed Al-Fayed means business in establishing the Whites amongst English football’s elite after a quiet summer in the transfer market at Craven Cottage.
van der Sar had been seeking a new home after being frozen out at Juventus, who finished second in Serie A last summer, following the arrival of Gianliugi Buffon for £33m from Parma. Fulham’s summer spending is set to kick up a gear with Jean Tigana close to concluding a deal to bring French under-21 international Steed Malbranque to London from Lyon in the coming days.
