Veteran full back Terry Phelan  has been signed off for a month by his doctor after claiming he is suffering from depression because of his treatment by Fulham.

Jean Tigana has preferred Rufus Brevett to the Republic of Ireland international after taking over from Paul Bracewell at Craven Cottage this summer and has told the former Everton defender that he is free to leave the club. Phelan has been training with Fulham’s academy squad at Motspur Park and told the Daily Mirror:

“It was really depressing me and I was getting angry all the time – even at home. So I went to my GP and he said I had acute stress reaction and I should take time off work.”

Phelan was angered by Fulham’s refusal to discuss a new deal following Bracewell’s departure – with talks about a contract extension initially deferred until the new year by Fulham’s managing director Michael Fiddy.
