Former England international John Salako signed for Fulham in July 1998 only a few days after being released by Bolton Wanderers. He scored on his debut for the Whites, curling home a fine free-kick to secure an opening day win for Kevin Keegan’s side, and made sixteen appearances as Fulham won the Second Division title by fourteen points that year. But his Fulham career will be most remembered for a glaring miss at Old Trafford when he failed to convert a rebound as the Cottagers lost 1-0 at Manchester United. Salako was swiftly nicknamed ‘Costas’ (as in cost us a replay) and left Fulham for Charlton Athletic in August1999 initially on loan – which was eventually converted into a permanent move.
