Tigerish midfielder Neil Smith joined Fulham on a free transfer from Gillingham following the Whites’ promotion from Division Three in 1997. His continued presence in the Cottagers’ first team under three managers despite being a budget purchase by Micky Adams is a testament to both his technical ability and character. Smith memorably scored Fulham’s equaliser at Tottenham Hotspur in the third round of the FA Cup in January 1998 and was a key part of the side that won the Second Division under Kevin Keegan. He made 90 appearances before signing for Reading in August 1999. Smith is now managing Cray Wanderers having guided Bromley to the FA Trophy final in 2018.
