Paul Moody proved a shrewd Micky Adams signing after Fulham paid Oxford United £200,000 for the striker’s services in August 1997. He scored 20 goals in 49 games for the Whites, although Adams was sacked six weeks into the season and Moody struggled initially to stake a claim for a starting spot under Ray Wilkins, who quickly broke the club’s transfer record in bringing in Paul Peschisolido. But Moody forced his way into the side, scoring seven goals in five games around the turn of the year, before being sent off in the play-off semi-final when Kevin Keegan had sacked his old friend at the end of the season. Moody couldn’t hold down a place in the Keegan side that swept to the Second Division title the following year – but signed off with a superb final day hat-trick after coming on at half-time against Preston North End.
