A dependable full back, Paul Watson arrived after Fulham paid Gillingham only £13,000 for his services during the summer of 1996. The versatile Watson, who was naturally left-footed but mostly featured on the right flank, missed only two games in the incredible promotion campaign that saw the Whites finish second to Wigan Athletic. He was an attacking full back who could whip in a dangerous cross or free-kick but was also a diligent defender. He teamed up with Adams again after the cult hero left Fulham – signing for Brentford in December 1997 and then Brighton and Hove Albion in 1999.
